The Dos and Don’ts of Using AI to Create Your Resumé
As artificial intelligence becomes more advanced, job seekers are using the emerging technology to help find employment. Goodwill’s Employment Specialists weigh in with tips on how to best use AI when creating a resumé.
DO use AI to check spelling, grammar, and general formatting.
Using AI to create your resumé can be very helpful, especially if you don’t know how to begin. AI is most helpful for job seekers when used to assist with layout and format and check proper grammar and spelling.
DO use AI to generate ideas.
AI is great for creating detailed job descriptions, generating ideas and providing an example of a personal summary. The more you add to your resumé, the more detailed to your experiences the content should be.
DON’T submit an AI-generated resumé without personalizing it first.
At times, AI still sounds like a computer impersonating a human. One thing to remember when using AI to create your resumé is to always review what the computer wrote. Try going back through the content and humanize it by adding your personal experiences.
DON’T use the same resumé for every job application.
For best results, continue to edit your resumé by tailoring it to a specific job opening. If you don’t go back to make edits, it could be very easy to tell you used AI. Some employers and HR professionals run resumés through a software to see how much was written by AI, as this may be seen as plagiarism. Even if an employer does not use this technology, AI-generated content can be easy to spot due to lack of emotion. This is where emphasizing your personal experiences can help you stand out to an employer.
DON’T rely solely on AI.
Try to use AI just as you would use spell check: don’t rely on it but use it to help enrich your writing.
